The premise of this book is that Jo is the actual author of Little Women, and this book is set in the middle of the original Little Women book. If you can get past the idea that Jo would have
a. written and published a book about her family
b. written something as lacking in sensationalism and adventure as Little Women c. written and published a book about her family and friends without changing their names or disguising them in any way
then this book is adorable. I had a hard time moving past that Jo actually made her family the main characters in such a blatant way as it seemed very out of character for the original Jo. However beyond that, it was a very sweet story about a young woman in trying circumstances trying to become an author and make it to the point that she can support her family, all while figuring out her own feelings. It was amusing to watch Jo try to decide the futures of herself and her sisters for the second volume of this book. I think it stayed very true to the original character in that she was stubbornly independent and wanted to achieve success without help. I also think that this book addresses the lack of romance between Laurie and Jo that readers over the years have been disappointed by. The writing style is more modern and not reminiscent of the original Little Women, but that means that this is a very sweet and approachable young adult romance.
