I was so excited when I saw this book because I recently read Little Women for the first time as an adult and absolutely fell in love. But as I'm reading the First Impression, I cannot understand why the authors have chosen to write the story the way they did. They've mixed details from Louisa May Alcott's story into Jo's story in ways that I don't think ring true to Little Women. I don't recall Jo publishing a book about her family in Little Women, and she doesn't seem like the kind of person to choose to do so. Although the actual Little Women is based on Louisa May Alcott's life, that doesn't mean that she and Jo are the same person. To me, this isn't a retelling or re-imagining, but a co-opting which doesn't fit with the spirit of the original story. I'm spending too much time trying to figure out why the author's are mixing things up this way to actually enjoy the story. For example, Jo is constantly thinking of the things that she changed from their lives for the purpose of the book, but the book she's referring to is the book in which she's a character and the events written in that book by Louisa May Alcott. Jo didn't choose to write in that she wore the scorched dress when really it was Amy; Louisa May Alcott wrote that in the book!
