I am often cautiously optimistic about retellings, and this one has me quite intrigued. Retellings for fairytales and certain classics (particularly Jane Austen) have been popular for a while, but this is the first time I have noticed Little Women getting the same treatment. I’m very curious about the path this reimaging will take, because in several ways the entire premise promises to drastically alter the original work. I think this will be a very controversial revisionist story concept, and that many Little Women purists will balk at the idea. However, I do remember playing the “what if?” game after I finished the original book for the first time, curious about an alternate universe where things ended differently. Within the first three chapters alone of Jo & Laurie, we see that this Jo March embellished several parts of the March family story in her book, so that the reader is already left wondering what else will be revealed to be fact and fiction. I'm very split on my opinion of this, so I definitely think one will have to read it to judge fairly. That being said, the cover art for this book is truly stunning and immediately drew my attention. The soft color palette for the background and title are perfect (very dreamy and romantic), and a good indication of the book genre.
