What attracted me to this book was that it was Native American literature, which I got an advance copy from Bookish. I was pleased to learn that the author is a member of first peoples tribe as well as a professor of American Indian studies in Minnesota. In some ways, the author may have felt that she had a burden to portray the characters in a certain way. There were times when the story seemed to drag, but overall the pacing and attention to details was okay.
The setting takes place in her hometown of Duluth as well as within the tribal lands. The story of Azure and Rain is not unique to children in the foster care system. In addition, the fact that Rain's academic disabilities goes both undiagnosed for so many years and then is misdiagnosed is not unusual either.
I was happy when the girls were able to live with Dolly and Junior and hoped for a happy ending. However. life is messy and I was glad that the ending was not a rush to tie up unresolved matters.
