I Couldn't Quite Connect

I wish I could say I loved this book. The story itself is heartbreaking, powerful, and thought-provoking. But I just didn't connect enough to feel the breadth of emotion.

At the beginning, and through various parts of the book, we're told this story from the perspective of Azure Sky as a child, before her mother disappeared. Azure was not quite three years old at the time, and I had trouble buying into a child that young having such full, vivid memories. While not a huge issue for me, I found it distracting.

The biggest problem for me was the writing style. The story comes to us through a wide variety of family and friends, and it's written as if they're telling us the story. Rather than living in the moment with the characters, I felt like I was removed from it all, being told instead of shown. I wanted to feel the ache along with them, instead of having them tell me what it was like at the time.

While this isn't my preferred writing style, the story is certainly profound.
