In the Night Memory was a book that was full of heart. A couple of young girls get put into the foster system and the horrors that come with it. While some families were nice to the girls, others had no desire to be kind or help the girls to be the best that they could be, looking at them as worthless charity cases. Meanwhile a bit of the story unfolds about their family on the reservation, and the mystery that surrounds their mother.

I did enjoy the book, but I felt as though there was something missing. There was little connection with Rain, and it felt as though there was too little of the story of Loretta. While Loretta was not the main character, she was instrumental in the story of Azure and Rain's life, and I would have loved a bit more development of her character, her life, and why she disappeared.

I also felt as though the end was really rushed. They killed off a character, rushed through a bunch of changes, and then bam! The book was basically over. There was not really enough time to adjust to the massive changes or time that happened at the end of the book. And the relationship that Azure builds at the end is not developed in the book at all. There definitely were moments and areas in which these things could have easily been built up versus other things that were mentioned.

But despite the flaws, I did enjoy the book, and I enjoyed the author's writing. I would be interested to see more from her on a similar topic, with a bit more focus on developing the main characters.
