A haunting yet beautiful look into Ojibwe culture. The book loosely follows the life of two girls, Azure and Rain who lost their mother and ended up in foster care. The book highlights some of the generational poverty and cycle of alcoholism and foster care use that affects displaced indigenous peoples. The cover is beautiful, as is the imagery of the Northern Lights and some of the spiritual elements of the book. Having the family tree and character connections at the front of the book was helpful. I wish there were websites to learn more about the history and culture of the Ojibwe and I wished several times to be able to translate the native language or some of the imagery, especially near the end of the story.
