Not What I Would Normally Read
Davies is a new author on the scene, and she really knocked it out of the park with this.
Queer literature seems to be an underserved community, or at least I haven't seen much of it before seeing this one. It was shocking at first, as I wasn't expecting it, but it turned out to be such a good story.
It begins quite a bit like you're talking with your drunk girlfriend in college. She tells you the tales of her lack of sex for three years (THREE YEARS?!?) and her annoyance of her roommates getting it on all the time.
She heads to a party with her roommates to a place she doesn't normally go, and a woman approaches her and nonchalantly suggests hooking up. She's taken aback, and so am I! She ends up hooking up with a dude later, exchanging numbers and going on a date with him. This leads to almost unbelievably awful sex and she decides she is DONE with men. Then she sees the same girl from the night before.
As the title suggests, she goes right in at the deep end of her new lesbian life. The scenes are pretty graphic at times, but not obscene, I think.
All of this puts our protagonist into a relationship with a questionable girl who she falls in love with. I loved watching them fall in love. It's a very sweet story. There are some twists and turns in there that make it extremely relatable.
Although I am a straight woman, I can see myself in this protagonist's shoes. I found this novel funny, relatable, heartwarming, heartwrenching, surprising and delightful. It's a well-written tale of friendship, relationships, and self-discovery.
