Not a Light Read

Based on the preview, I thought this book would be a light, funny read. However, it slowly drifts into some sad and serious territory.

Warning: Ever so slight possible spoilers to come...

When I read romance, I tend to read "romance" that gravitates more toward the Jane Austen style of really serious longing glances. This book definitely is not that type of romance. LGBTQ issues, finding one's identity, family issues, friend issues, elder care, sexual satisfaction, BDSM, polyamory, job satisfaction, and abuse were all just some of the issues discusssed in this book. While I don't clutch my pearls when I read graphic scenes, this book just seemed to cover a lot of territory and I personally think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if it had stayed lighter and lessened the number of issues.

For me, the first half of the book was not my typical read, but it was well written and fun. However, the second half of the book, was still technically written the same and yet the tone seemed very different.
