I was super excited to start this one. In at the Deep End follows Julia, a 26-year old civil servant coming out both literally and figuratively. There was a lot of British-esque humor mixed in, some of which went over my head as I’m not from the UK. It was still an enjoyable read nonetheless. Julia is a fun character; as readers, we can empathize with her quest in figuring out who she is. I wouldn’t recommend this story for someone seriously deliberating on coming out because this book offers a lighter approach, one that doesn’t seem taken too seriously. I did appreciate the supportiveness of Julia’s loved ones, but I think this coming-out tale lacked certain realities and emotions that come along with it.
