Ikenga, set in Nigeria, tells the story of a young boy Nnamdi whose father's recent murder and his family's subsequent poverty forces him to grapple with his own powerlessness until one day an Ikenga grants him superpowers. The villains are deliciously evil, showing up to Nnamdi's father's funeral to gloat in their best clothes, and have supernatural abilities of their own and larger-than-life personalities and backstories. Nnamdi is an interesting character that a lot of young readers will relate to. Nnamdi's friends Chioma, Ruff Diamond, Jide, and Hassan look to provide a dynamic cast and engaging friendships. Okorafor's writing flows well, and I was constantly wondering what would happen next.
