Ikenga by Nnedi Okoraor is a fantastic superhero type book aimed at the middle school aged reader. Though I am not the target audience, I often enjoy middle school and young adult fiction. I really enjoyed this quick read!
The author does a great job with the setting and the portrayal of modern day life in Nigeria. There are also a few pop culture references throughout this book which adds to the enjoyment of the reader when reading this book.
The main character is Nnamdi. He is the son of the murdered police chief who deals with his grief and anger only to find out that he possess magical powers. Nnamdi struggles with the results of using his powers and the reader is left rooting for Nnamdi.
This is a great superhero in the real world read and is sure to please any reader!
