This is the first book that I have read by Nnedi Okorafor. I love this quote that she made on Goodreads about Ikenga:

"I’m so excited to present this tale of a black boy embracing his power on his own terms in the face of strife. It’s both a universal and specific narrative, full of mysticism and adventure, and it was an absolute joy to write."

This book is filled from front to back with a magic that I think young readers will be able to lose themselves in - and maybe learn something about themselves along the way too. There are plenty of times that I smiled while reading Ikenga, especially with the pop culture references. However, I am not the target audience for this book, so it was just a little off for me. I have passed the book on to my 12-year-old son though and I am pretty sure he is going to LOVE it.

Thank you to BookishFirst for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. The fact that the book was free has made no impact on my opinion of it.
