I thoroughly enjoyed this middle grade superhero mystery. Set in a modern day Nigeria, the story follows a young boy, Nnamdi, as he copes with the death of his father, the police chief. We watch Nnamdi move on from the devastating loss, come to terms with the change in lifestyle, and of course, gain super powers! I thought the characters were compelling and I appreciated how our perception of them changed as Nnamdi developed and began to think of them in a more nuanced way. The plot was fun and I liked the magic. I hope that there are more books in this series, as this really felt like an origin story for a broader arc. I would recommend this to any of the kids I know who are interested in a fantasy set in our world.
