I'm a fan of Okorafor's previous series (Akata Witch and Binti) and Ikenga is a promising start of a YA superhero story. There are dark elements in the setting (like Gotham City in Batman) and a taste of new superpowers in this first impression that have me hooked. Okorafor's rich imagery paint a picture of a Nigerian city that has been overrun by criminals and I'm eager to learn more about how Nnamdi will learn and use the Ikenga to avenge his father's murder and restore order. Seems like a great escapist read for these times.
