It isn't often that we get to read the first few chapters of a middle grade novel here on BookishFirst, so I was very intrigued when I saw this as an option. From the first 45 pages or so, I can tell this is going to be an important fantasy story about loss, family, and about finding your place in the world - all while trying to protect the town from bad guys. I don't think I'll be picking this one up, but I'm excited to see what other people think it.
