Alice Sun already built a strong academic standing and future at Airington (an elite but hella expensive school) when her parents explain it’s too pricey to keep up with and they need her to find a cheaper school. She feels like her future is basically gone without Airington, but she bites her tongue because they worked so hard to keep her there.

She has a breakdown, but what seems like a panic attack is actually a supernatural awakening. She can turn invisible.

This gives her an idea, “let’s monopolize this by doing favors for my rich peers so I can pay off the tuition myself.” So she goes to her rival Henry (and love interest hoho), and he makes an app for it, they work together, and sparks fly.

I really appreciate Liang’s class commentary because it’s woven into the story seamlessly. Her writing is simple and says so much. Through Alice’s devastation that she has to leave because of money, Liang highlights opportunities are limited when people are strapped for cash. Alice studies incessantly and maintains her position at the top of her class, but the potential opportunities Airington provides are immediately erased. She deserves to stay but money takes away her spot.

When the favors get increasingly problematic, Liang explores how desperation makes people feel like they have no choice but to resort to illegal acts to keep themselves afloat, which Alice does to get payment. This is a recurring theme in the book and Liang handles it with care, explaining the nuance behind her actions.

I love Alice and Chanel’s friendship, and Alice and Henry are so cute. I have pink and purple tabs scattered all over my book marking sweet moments between Alice, Chanel, and Henry. I liked that Liang showed they lead different lives but they come together through their struggles.

It’s an easy and valuable read, 5 stars from me!
