Alice Sun goes to an elite boarding school in Beijing on a partial scholarship. Her biggest worry this semester is staying in school due to its rising cost. She feels invisible in this school with the rich students, until one day, she uncontrollably turns invisible. Using this new ability of hers, she teams up with her biggest academic rival, Henry Li, in order to monetize this new ability. As the tasks escalate to actual crime, will Alice lose her conscience?
If You Could See the Sun is Ann Liang's debut novel. It's a beautifully written young adult magical realism novel. There was also a touch of romance. The amount of snark between her and Henry had me laughing a lot. The one thing that I didn't like was that her ability was never concretely resolved. I also liked that Alice was just trying to figure out what she wanted in her life.
I'd recommend this for fans of academia reads and magical realism.
