The opening chapter of If You Could See the Sun is a complete attention grabber with a shocker of an ending that pulls the rug right out from the reader. Even more impressive is the way the chapter also introduces a compelling main character in Alice Sun, a scholarship student at an elite Beijing boarding school who just found out that she may need to leave at the semester because of her family’s financial trouble. The narrative is so well structured that I was all in on the elite boarding school politics from the perspective of an outsider from the start. When Alice discovers she is literally, rather than just figuratively, invisible, I was riveted. A young adult novel sure to speak to readers who have ever felt out of place or unseen. I cannot wait to see what happens next and see what Alice does with this revelation.
