This book was a really slow and beautiful exploration of different family dynamics. While every family member didn't get equal time, honestly I appreciated the ones that were focused on as they were some of the most interesting. At first I struggled to understand the relationships of who was a child and who was a grandchild, but after drawing a family tree I had a much better understanding of the dynamics at play. In particular, I enjoyed Alice and Red's storylines. I found them to be very touching and the parallel of Red's storyline to his grandfather was something I really appreciated. Ellen was a character I wish we got to know more, as it seemed to gloss over her feelings about the truth about her relationship with her husband. She took it in stride, but I wish we had seen a little more exploration, or a conversation with Fred about his relationship with Gerry.
