I read this book not long after taking a trip to several former-communist eastern european countries and going to a good few museums that showed what those regimes were like. This was a great follow-up to that experience! Ruta Sepetys has covered many different time periods and locations but each book feels very thoroughly researched. I have a history degree. I love picking apart historical fiction books. This is the author I turn to when I want something that I know even I won't find anything to pick at. I Must Betray You is an interesting portrayal of youth resistance in Romania during an important transitional period. Cristian is an interesting character who is put in an incredibly difficult position and chooses to fight. He works well as a protagonist who is also a tool to teach people about history that (at least in America) they may not be aware of.
