🇷🇴 Synopsis:
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force.

Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

💭 Thoughts:
This is a deeply moving story. I don’t typically read this genre and I don’t know a lot about Romania, but after reading the synopsis I decided I had to read it. I’m so glad I did. I finished this book in a day. I couldn’t put it down.

The history of communism in Romania was not covered in any history class I took in school. I had no idea of the injustices that the people suffered at the hands of Nicolae Ceaușescu.

I was deeply moved by Cristian and his family’s story. The unimaginable hardships that they faced. All the things so many people take for granted. No electricity, no water, no food, no freedom. Living everyday with the fear of not knowing who to trust. It’s all just wow. It’s hard for me to truly give the review this book deserves. I’m still caught up in my emotions for reading it.

I’ll just say, if you enjoy historical fiction with a bit of romance and family drama, then you need to read this book.
