Readers can always count on Ruta Sepetys to transport us to unique, too-little-known places and times in history. I Must Betray You, set in 1989 Romania, follows the story of 17-year old Cristian Florescu. "Cristi" longs to become a writer, but after he's blackmailed by the secret police (Romania's Securitate) to become an informer, he risks everything to reveal to the world what is really happening in his country. I Must Betray You is an excellent choice for fans of suspenseful stories centered on true history (note that a few brutally realistic scenes are not for the faint of heart). The author writes in her closing note, "Together, we can shine a light in dark corners of the past. Together, we can give history a voice." Even though this is not my favorite of Ruta's novels (I loved the history but did not fully connect with the character; deep down I wanted the novel to be written from Cici's point of view) it's definitely worthwhile!
