I have read a few books by Ruta Sepetys and this one was just as good! I Must Betray You takes place in Romania in 1989 when secrets were about the only thing that would keep you alive. It was based on the true time when the Romanian government had all the citizens spying on each other and keeping all of them living in constant fear.
Cristian, a young man, wants to become a writer and just not have so many worries. He starts to realize that he cannot trust anyone and he must look out for himself because no one else will. He is asked to take advantage of his friendships and spy on friends for the government.
This story takes place right up the awful tragedy of public hangings in Romania on Christmas day. I had no idea that all this happened. It was so well written and I went on to do some research so I could learn more. I would recommend this one and it will be a great one to discuss.
