As always, Sepetys has delivered something extraordinary. I rarely read young adult but I make the exception for her every time. I didn’t know anything about these dark years of the 1980s in Romania and very little about what happened behind any part of the Iron Curtain despite how recently these human rights abuses occurred. It’s a fascinating story of a teen turned informer that places the reader right there alongside the characters. I felt the fear, the paranoia, the confusion and I couldn’t put it down. I admire Sepetys’ ability to out so much into a book less than 300 pages written for a younger audience. Her dedication to research and accuracy are apparent and it is sure to make readers want to know more about the history of that time.

I got this book from BOTM and then it took me a while to pick it up. Sepetys is an auto-buy for me but I just didn't think I'd find the topic interesting. Very glad to say that I was wrong.
