Sepetys is a phenomenal writer and storyteller. I can always count on her novels to teach me about an obscure piece of history that I never learned in school.

This book is a little slower paced and took me a while to really sink my teeth into, but the short chapters and little cliff hangers at the end of each one made it easy to keep going. It was worth it.

The only reason I knocked off a star is because there were moments in the book where I wanted more background on the situation in Romania at the time, especially because I couldn't set the scene in my head as well as I could a story surrounding WWII.

Granted, the protagonist, Cristian, whose POV the story is told through, is also in the dark on many things going on in the country.

While frustrating not having a story wrapped up in a neat little bow with every bit of information given to the reader about 1989 Romania, it was still very satisfying.
