If Ruta Sepetys gave me her grocery list, I'd give it 5 starts. I Must Betray You was a wonderfully written historical thriller that I preordered as soon as I read the synopsis. This author picks relatively unknown periods or events in history and really extrapolates them out into a way that is accessible for young adult readers. Sepetys does impeccable research and really fleshes out her characters so the reader will care about them. She also makes the pages fly by with lots of action and short chapters. I knew nothing about the Romanian revolution, and I was absolutely fascinated by this story. It felt especially relevant when thinking about the current war in Ukraine and helped me understand a bit more about the fall of the Soviet Union. Ruta Sepetys is the queen of young adult historical fiction, and her newest novel absolutely cements her title. Brava!
