Intense Historical Fiction
Ruta Sepetys has an incredibly captivating quality when it comes to her writing. It's fast and engaging while also being incredibly intense and important. I have read one other title from her and was drawn in and hooked immediately. I know this is historical fiction, but reading this book felt so scarily real, which really makes me think. I almost thought it was too quick at points because I wanted to fly through it and I felt like there were parts that needed to be drawn out and digested a little more. Overall, I loved the aspects of poetry and the fight ingrained in all of the characters. The title is also quite fitting and really makes questions come up throughout the story. I do feel like I learned something and it was definitely an intense read. I really valued Cristian as a character and I thought it was interesting to see how life was from his own perspective.
