I am a big fan of the author Ruta Sepetys. I have read several of her books and I always learn a little bit about an event in history. I Must Betray You is a work of historical fiction. I must say it was a very emotional, intense, and eye-opening read. It takes place in Romania, 1989. Romania is under the communist rule of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. While Nicolae is living in luxury the people of Romania are starving, living in bare conditions, cold, and always fearful. Many are “recruited” as informants with the promise of medicine and food. No one can turn down this offer or face death. Seventeen year old Christian is recruited and must spy on an American ambassador. He knows this is wrong but what can he do. As the story unfolds Christian becomes a fighter for his country and seeks freedom for his people. This story is not easy to read. The brutality and the struggle of the people of Romania is disturbing and a piece of history I knew nothing about. It’s a must read and I recommend.
