I didn't love the prose/writing style used here, but am definitely glad I read it. I had no knowledge of this era in Romania's history and it was fascinating (yet depressing) to read about. This started off as a little bit of a slow burn for me, but once I got into the flow of the story, I was absolutely hooked and I flew through it. Seeing things through Cristian's eyes when he's essentially forced into spying for the regime was fascinating. His changing attitude and beliefs and trust was incredibly well portrayed, and the occasional "reports" from those spying on him in turn added a sense of tension to the story. The last third of the book was action-packed, and I definitely didn't see some of the twists coming. All in all, Sepetys has done it again - crafted a brilliantly told and very compelling YA story about an often overlooked historical period. Brava.
