This book, in only a few chapters gives a remarkable look into everyday Romanian life during the reign of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. Even in their homes, people believe there are hidden microphones everywhere and they speak in whispers. Paranoia is everywhere. At first I thought perhaps surveillance was something overblown by the propaganda of the time; that the main character was overreacting. But it's worse--they actually follow through on arresting, harassing or intimidating people for the most minor of 'crimes' or through manipulation wrench private information from unwilling participants.

The book itself is beautifully written, with a main character you can't help but cheer for even through difficult and questionable decisions (and this was only during the first few chapters). You fall right into the time period alongside him and can visualize the dreary, gray world that surrounds him. You learn to love his family who are the very reason he gets wrapped up into spying in the first place. This tale of one boy showcases the struggle of millions of Romanians in an engaging and heart-pounding read.
