Historical Fiction can be so hard to read at times, and especially now with current events.

During the pandemic, I struggled reading HF a lot. And now with Ukraine, I wasn’t sure if I could handle this book. Ruta Sepetys is one of my absolute favorite YA authors, and I’ve been so excited to read this one! I’m so glad I did!

I learned so much reading this book. This book takes place just 3 years before I was born! HF is so often WWII, so when it’s not, it seems to hit just a little different. Especially when it’s in your life time!

I loved that this book only had one POV (which I prefer!) I loved that you really got to know Cristian and his struggles, and his family! Ruta Sepetys was so good at explaining what it was like there, with the cement mass housing, waiting in line for nonexistent rations, stray dogs everywhere, communist jails, civilians spying on each other and how Romania portrayed Americans.

I loved this book, and still think about it a week later! Definitely easy to give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Even if you never read YA, read this book! It’s so important right now. The book is less than 300 pages, and only an 8 hour audiobook if you needed more convincing 😉
