I’ll start by saying, please make sure you read all author's notes at the end to understand why the author wrote this book. While she is Lithuanian - American, the novel was written with the help of Romanian historians. People shared their stories with her so she can write a book. She became a loud voice for those who had to whisper for generations.
This is a YA historical novel. You won’t find complex thoughtful writing and that’s okay. Sometimes you want simple writing but with an important message, this is it.
I absolutely loved it, being Ukrainian I can relate to a lot of stories shared and revolution rang close to my heart. All the details described, the lines to get the food with ration cards, the same clothing, limited access to the media, etc. That's all true. When you think about how crazy it is, that this happened in our lifetime please remember that other things happen literally today. The way revolution was described, this is a current reality in many countries and nations right this minute.
I’ve read the book with my phone in hand, I had to Google a lot of things the author mentioned and while it may be not the most complex and layered, it was all factual and to the point.
