Amazing Writing

Ruta Sepetys does something that all authors wish they could do: bring history into a story, and then somehow turn it into real life again. The only other author I'd read who had done this was Markus Zusak in The Book Thief. To be able to pull fiction so perfectly from real life is an extraordinary thing. Although not authentic, Sepetys's POVs from historical landmarks present a very intense story that the readers will not only completely fall into, but that will hurt them much more than reading a history book about the event would.

This book, like her other books, has a beautiful and intriguing title and cover. I also like that she sticks to what she knows-- she's not out here trying to write a comedy when her talent is clearly in writing tragedies. From Between Shades of Grey to this book, Sepetys does a phenomenal job of bringing back the memory of the past-- just through fictional characters.
