All. The. Stars. Yall, this book was so so good. I read almost all of it in a single sitting. Ruta Sepetys drops you in Romania in the late 1980s as a 17-year-old boy. It chronicles his trials and tribulations growing up under a communist regime – being smart enough to realize it’s a bad situation, yet feeling powerless to do anything about it. This book was written so well, it was so engaging, it was informative, the characters were incredible. The author even let you play along a little to figure out who was an Informant. Historical fiction books like this are so important because they show the past in a relatable way. By reading this novel, you realize the horror of socialism and communism, not the propaganda that the leaders of these regimes would like you to believe. By learning about history and the bravery of a few people who stood up for freedom, we can help prevent repeating it. I loved this book. I’d recommend it to everyone – young adults through adults.
