What I know about Romania before reading this book:
1. In the 1980's, as a little girl, I wanted to be Nadia Comanechi.

How sad. I remember when the USSR broke up but never really gave much thought to anything else in regards to Romania or it's surrounding countries. I Must Betray You has opened my eyes to many things and is so needed right now. Our country has socialism knocking on it's back door and how quickly things can change. It was heartbreaking to read how these families lived during Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship. Even though this is a Young Adult book that is also historical fiction I would recommend it for adults to read too. It was well written and had a hint of mystery/thriller vibe to it due to the spying that everyone did to one another. Neighbors, friends, ect. just like 1984, 'big brother is always watching.' except big brother isn't just the government. This was a eye opener for sure and a must read.
