A person is not your friend if they ask you to take the fall for something stupid they did. Especially if they subtly (or not so subtly) hold something over you to do so. Clearly Zach feels he has to accept responsibility for Ryan's actions for the team and his chance at team captain, but doesn't send the best message at the start of book - one that seems geared more towards middle-graders than high school students.
