In many regards, Katherine Center's How to Walk Away reminds me of a more lighthearted, gender-reversed version of Me Before You. I absolutely adored Jojo Moyes' novel, so it was a surprise to me that I did not enjoy How to Walk Away nearly as much; in fact, I found some parts of the novel to be uncomfortably problematic. The relationship that develops between the two main leads (i.e. a surly physical therapist and his recently traumatized, paralyzed patient) seemed oddly inappropriate, and the novel brushes aside many of the physical and mental struggles that burn victims and paraplegics experience by making the protagonist overly cheerful and optimistic. While both How to Walk Away and Me Before You deal with heavy subjects, the latter feels more meaningful and authentic.
