There's nothing I love more than a good old witch book. Add in musicals and I'm transported back into my own high school days. I would have loved to have this book as a teenager! Adult me is going to enjoy the heck out of it.

The writing style is approachable and easy to fall into without sounding repetitive and cliche - I was drawn in on the first page, which is often a struggle for me with first person POV. The main character is relatable, entertaining, and occasionally heartbreaking.

This book seems to have everything — strong women, funny characters, drama, and romance. It handles racism, discrimination, predatory teachers, and the high stakes pressure to succeed that high-schoolers face really well — and most importantly without sugarcoating any of it.

The teacher, who is the most nausea-inducing character I've read since Umbridge, was handled satisfyingly.
