“How to Success in Witchcraft” is a fun, spellbinding romp with interesting characters, a fun high school setting, and an entertaining magic system. Our main character is vibrant and exudes confidence. She unfortunately is negatively manipulated and assaulted by her theater teacher, and becomes hell bent on finding her justice for his actions. As exciting and thrilling as this book can be, I also felt constantly reminded that this book is for a demographic unlike my own. As a soon 27 year old, I’m no longer the teen YA demographic that this book is considered, but I feel that it’s very clear that I am too old for this story. The slang, the references, the inside jokes are lost on me, which is more of a me problem maybe than anything else, I would just love a YA magic high school setting that doesn’t feel so teenager-y, like Sofia Gonalez’s work.
