I forgot this was a middle grade novel, and as I read I found myself double-checking to make sure it was MG because, wow, there's a lot this book covers.

From being in school with a learning disability, to struggling with family issues, and racial discrimination -- there's so much the author explores and I'm glad this was done for a MG book. While I personally feel like the author could have gone deeper, I am grateful and appreciative of the work done with the way the book is now. There is plenty to discuss in a book club or structured small group or whole group discussions,

With the writing, I really love second person perspective in books, and am always looking for the next chance to appreciate them. I'm glad this book was written the way it was, as it created more of a connection between the reader and Ariel. I wonder if the connection would have been different had the author chosen a different style.
