I love the illustrated cover of this book- I think it’s clever and fun and the bright colors really drew my attention.
This beautiful YA historical fiction book takes place in 1967 and centers around Ariel, a 12 year old Jewish girl living with her parents (who own a bakery) and Ariel’s older sister who meets and falls in love with a man from India. Their families both struggle with this development and the story shows how the interracial couple’s relationship impacts not only their own lives, but also those of Ariel and her family during a pivotal time in history.
This is a well-written coming of age story and a family drama which also touches on important topics like racism and discrimination, bullying, and learning disabilities. It has well-crafted characters and an interesting and thought-provoking plot.
Overall I think this book is a story of love- love for family, love for others, and love for oneself.
