This book tells the story of Ariel Goldberg (Ari), growing up and the challenges she faces. The book is set in 1967, and Ari is part of one of few Jewish families in a small town in Connecticut. She adores her sister, Leah, who is 18 and seems to do everything right.
Leah shares with Ari that she is dating a young man from India, and she is worried that her parents will not approve. When Leah decides to elope with Raj after the Loving v. Virginia ruling, Ari is hurt that her sister didn't let her know where she was going.
As she struggles with her new role in the family with her sister gone, she gains the courage to find Leah and try to mend her broken family. She also uses poetry to cope with all of the tension.
The characters in this book are well developed, and the writing flows well. This book teaches a lot about finding your voice and standing up for what you believe in. Great YA novel!
