How to Find What You’re Not Looking For is a great middle grade that takes place in the 1960s. It tells the story of 12-year-old Ariel Goldberg and her family. The family bakery runs into financial trouble, and her older sister has eloped with a young man from India following the Supreme Court decision that strikes down laws banning interracial marriage. Not only that but Ariel has to deal with a learning disability, school bully, and figure out why her parents don't accept her sister's new husband. Ariel feels like most of us do when confronted with things we cannot change and that is helpless. The character is strong and you can't help but root for her. The story is well written and proves a real glimpse of what it was like during the 60s era. It takes a look at subjects such as interracial marriage, racism, prejudice, and finding your voice. It is an excellent middle-grade read.
