How It Feels to Float is a YA realistic fiction with an unreliable narrator. The familiar theme of mental illness weighs heavily in this novel, especially since the main character is a young woman who is struggling with reality. As Biz's life unravels, along with it her ability to separate reality from fantasy, the reader is dragged along at a sluggish pace. I had a hard time connecting to Biz, despite the turmoil she faces. The author spends little time on Biz's family, although the inclusion of some parts of their past would have helped give the novel some legitimacy. The result is a novel that really goes nowhere and I had a hard time finishing it. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend How It Feels to Float to other readers.
