How It Feels to Float captures the struggle of a teen girl in Australia struggling with the loss of her dad at a young age, the negative fall out from some questionable decisions and a history of mental illness that is beginning to awaken inside of Biz. Looking to find herself and figure out who she is leads to new friends and adventures that will forever alter Biz’s life.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Helena Fox’s debut novel. She captures mental illness, especially depression, in a poetic and lyrical way that evokes a lot of emotion without passing any judgements. Watching the main character descend into a breakdown from a first person point of view is hard to do and not come off as fantastical or stereotypical. Definitely pick of this book if you’re interested in a YA coming-of-age story that feels fresh and modern.
