I won a copy of this book from BookishFirst. The story begins with Amir and his family (dad, mom, and thirteen-year-old sister) are being detained and questioned after making a scene on a plane. Amir is gay, but he hasn't told his family yet. When two boys from his high school blackmail Amir with a picture of him and another boy kissing and Amir cannot come up with the money, he runs away. He does not mean to go to Rome, but an advertisement for gelato makes up his mind for him. He spends a month in Rome making new friends and getting to know himself. While he is away, his sister discovers that Amir is gay and accidentally tells their parents. His Iranian, Muslim parents refuse to believe it at first and say that "they can work on it" when Amir gets home. Amir refuses to come home because he knows his parents will never accept him. Eventually, his family finds him and take him back home, but the incident on the plane occurs first. During their questioning, Amir's parents finally admit that they love their son no matter what.
