A truly fantastic story about family, found family, and being true to oneself.
Poor Amir is so terrified by the thought of coming out to his Iranian parents that he ends up accidentally running away to Italy and discovering that being out and proud is all a matter of being open to new experiences and to being himself.
I'd heard about this book during a panel in which the author participated almost 6 months before it being published. He talked about the crazy events that led up to him taking his real-life experience and turning into this book. I don't know if it's that or just Ahmadi putting his all into writing as truthfully as possible, but everything about Amir's feelings prior to running away and how he experiences Rome and the family he finds there rings true and hits the emotional bullseye.
I loved reading about Amir finding his way, discovering life through Rome and the friends he made there, and the inevitable confrontation and reuniting with his family. The fact that it's all presented as if the family is explaining the situation to the CBP only adds to the creativity.
It's truly a great book to show those that feel their differences make them outcasts that there will always be a place for them.
