This poor kid. I can't imagine a worse way to come out to one's family than a family feud on a transcontinental flight. Well, except maybe to end up in interrogation at an airport with the whole family in separate rooms. What a ride. I'm totally here for it. Whether or not this is a true story or the fictionalized account of a true story, I couldn't really say, but I'm not sure it matters. I love all the aspects of a uniquely original coming out story that doesn't just trot out the usual tropes, but turns the on their heads a little and gives me something fresh to read. There's blackmail, bullying, travel, bravery, cultural diversity, modernism verses traditionalism, and all against such a pop culture savvy backdrop. I read the excerpt and I wanted to keep reading.

I was surprised by the interrogation I loved the most. It was the father. He's been here before. He knows his rights and he's done this. He's seen this. He's only willing to sit quietly until it's over because his experience has taught him something about rooms like these and accusations like this. I was moved by that and maybe I read too much into it but it just struck me that way.

Anyway this was a beautiful excerpt and it was fun and funny, and touching, and I really want to know what happens next.
