Poor Amir. He’s gay and he’s sure his parents will disown him because they are Muslim and Iranian. So, he tries to keep it secret. But then he meets Jackson at his new school, some bullies catch them kissing and actually blackmail him with a picture. He has to pay thousands of dollars or they will tell his parents, he doesn’t have the money. When his plans for college starts to fall apart too, he decides to leave. The bullies will out him to his parents at graduation. So he skips graduation and heads for the airport.
He decides that he will come home if his parents still love him.
But when his parents call, he realizes they don’t know yet. He panics and flies to Rome.
Eventually, a month or so later, the whole family winds up being interrogated at the airport after getting into a fight on the plane.
